L'alpage des Ferme de Marie

"Imagine being whisked up a mountainside in a fleet of Land Rovers, the rugged path lined with rocks, a stream babbling alongside, and cows grazing freely in the alpine pastures. That’s how our day began at L’Alpage des Fermes, a private chalet lunch experience offered by the iconic Les Fermes de Marie. Tucked away high in the mountains, the chalet is owned by the family behind the hotel, and getting there is half the adventure. Access is only by foot for hikers or, in our case, a bumpy 4×4 ride that made the journey feel both intimate and remote."

"Upon arrival, we were greeted by a long table set with umbrellas for shade, nestled on the edge of the mountain with panoramic views of the peaks. A tranquil pond sat nearby, with children and even a golden retriever puppy—the unofficial mascot—running around the green space. Our son joined several other children, making it feel like a relaxed family gathering, even though this experience is limited to a select few guests on specific summer and autumn days.

The aperitif was a celebration of local flavors: platters of charcuterie, cheeses, and even homemade raspberry wine. It was hard to say no to the endless selection of wines from the family’s estate in Luberon. Inside, a roaring fire warmed the chalet as the chefs worked their magic over it for hours. The tables were lined with a generous spread—homemade salads, fresh pastries, and soups that set the stage for what felt like an alpine feast.

Lunch kicked off with hearty starters like warm lentil salad, a rich quiche of Beaufort, and a traditional stone soup served from a cauldron. The main courses were the stars of the show—pork confit, spit roasted chicken, and beef tenderloin cooked over the embers, all served to order. And of course, there were giant Staub pots filled with roasted potatoes, carrots, and the creamiest polenta you’ve ever tasted. The meal was simple, but in the best possible way—like something a friend would make for you at their cozy mountain home.

Dessert was no less indulgent: raspberry and wild blueberry tarts, giant meringues with double cream, crème caramel, and a variety of cakes laid out like a dream buffet. As we sipped coffee and a bit of local génépi, the chalet’s general manager surprised us by pulling out a red accordion. We all sang and it all felt like we’d stepped into a scene from a movie—except it was real.

This kind of experience is reserved for guests of Les Fermes de Marie. It’s not something you can just book online or invite friends to—it’s a family affair, and for that day, you’re welcomed as part of it. There’s something magical about being up in the mountains, disconnected from the outside world, eating food that’s been prepared with such care, surrounded by laughter and views you’ll never forget. If you ever have the chance to go, don’t hesitate—you’ll be talking about it for years."
